Well after two months, it seems like Maddox has pretty much always lived with us. This past weekend, at a birthday party for one of Ellis's buddies, one of the other parents asked what the baby's name was and without even thinking I said, "Well Maddox, which is my wife's maiden name, but we call him Blues." So, I think that is his semi-official nickname. It isn't even worth the time to call him Maddox in front of Ellis. One of the other parents who often helps at the school overheard the conversation at the party and came over and said, "oh yeah, I have been lectured by your son that his brother is Blue's Clues."

some facts about Ellis, as revealed from recent conversations
1) He does not know what ninjas actually are....
Me: Did you play outside today or was it too rainy?
Ellis: I played outside...Burton was the black ninja and I was the green ninja. Mom, what do ninjas eat?
2) He loves the letter T...
Me: So, Ellis, your friend's birthday party is this weekend, what do you think we should get him for a present?
Ellis: Oh, probably a trampoline.
Me: Hmm.
Ellis: Or a trombone.
3) He's already learning manipulation tactics....
Ellis: Mom, let's play "I spy" or a guessing game.Me: Okay, a guessing game.
Ellis: Um, no, try a different one.
Me: "I spy"?
Ellis: Yes!! You got it, we're gonna play "I spy"
4) He's a spiritual heir of Ron Swanson...
Me: Okay, Ellis, it's about noon, what would you like for lunch?
Ellis: No, I don't want lunch. I want breakfast.
a short update
The first three days back at work went fine. Nothing (leaving the baby, pumping, having to actually work) was a dreadful as expected. Maddox was a bit fussy and didn't eat much on Wednesday, but that may have been the after effects of the 2 month vaccination shots. But he seems to have bounced back to his mellow personality and huge appetite in the past 48 hours.

ugh
Tomorrow is the dreaded day on which I return to work. Logistically, we're quite prepared. We have an extremely enviable child care set up...Aunt Catherine has been taking care of Maddox for weeks already and, since she lives here, she'll never be late in the morning :) Plus, she's awesome. Maddox has been a champ drinking milk from a bottle and we have a decent stockpile of milk in the freezer. Emotionally, however, the preparation is not in such good shape. I never thought I'd be able to leave such a small baby and I'm still not sure it's the right thing.
At any rate, my boss is leaving the university at the end of summer, which means my job also disappears. So, I'm hoping to go back for 6 or 8 weeks to finish a project and write a paper. Ideally, this will allow me to be done working by the time Ellis's preschool adjourns for the summer and Catherine heads back to Indiana. I'm feeling very conflicted about prioritizing getting the paper done, but I guess I've been in academia too long not to believe that I must do so to justify my work over the past months. But at least I have this self-imposed deadline to push me to get experiments done quickly.

dad, do you have any octopies?
Among other goodies, Ellis's Easter basket contained a pack of fish-themed "Go Fish" cards. Ellis got the hang of it right away and seemed to enjoy playing. Those of you who've played cards with Trey know that he is a serious card player and so I reckon this will be last picture of Ellis having light-hearted fun playing cards with Dad:
